Meet our resident saxophonist

If you hear the wonderful, soulful sound of a saxophone in the Aviary, you can be sure it's being lovingly played by 'Sleepy Beagle', our resident jazz musician.

'Sleepy Beagle' is the alter ego of Alan Fiz, a musician well known through the local area. Having studied the saxophone for the past 15 years, he joined the Aviary Bar as our resident saxophone player in August of 2025.

His musical influences include the saxophonist and clarinet player, Sidney Bechet, and Lester Young, known for his use of subtone, something 'Sleepy Beagle' has picked up along his jouney. Other influences are varied with musical flirtations with everyone from Pink Floyd & ABBA, to Radiohead & Curtis Stigers. He plays both tenor and alto sax, and has performed locally with many duos and bands including 'YooToo', 'Sax n Skinny' & 'Double Tap'. Perhaps most famously, 'Sleepy Beagle' was also the saxophonist in critically acclaimed local band, 'Handball Alley'.
